Twenty-three hardy folks braved 107 degree temperatures this week to tie dye with us!

It was hot, but we had a lot of fun, and the resulting t-shirts are beautiful.

Scrapbooking!

On Saturday, May 6, National Scrapbooking Day, a group of us got together to learn about scrapbooking from Joy Mendez.

We talked about types of scrapbooks, layouts, materials, and where to begin, and then had lots of hands-on time to create. We were lucky to have access to a wide variety of beautiful materials that Joy brought including papers, adhesives, punches, stamps, and embellishments like buttons, beads, and more.

It was great fun, and folks made some lovely scrapbook pages. Here are a few handouts Joy shared with scrapbooking suggestions and guidelines.

Photo block puzzle

A photo block puzzle is an attractive way to display your pictures and also makes a great gift.

To begin, photos are selected, cropped and sized to fit the desired design. Then they are printed and trimmed.

Next the images are glued to the block faces.

The final product can have images on as many sides of the blocks as you like. You can also choose to have one photo cover all the blocks or to have images just cover one or two.

There is a kit available from the library that includes all the materials you need to complete this project. Come check it out!

Kids Maker Day

On March 27, local grade K-4 students gathered at the Portal Library for a Maker Day.

We started with a challenge to design and build a structure using toothpicks and mini-marshmallows.

After that students made their own books. Topics included spring, the seasons, weather, and cooking.

Students’ favorite activity was the photo challenges and digital photography. Below are some of the pictures students took.

We ended the day by making “unbirthday” cards for family and friends.

Unbirthday cards

On March 9, grade K-2 students were invited to make “un-birthday” cards. These cards could be addressed to anyone who wasn’t having a birthday. Students made cards for family members and friends. One of their favorite parts was using the Washi craft tape.

Materials to make greeting cards and other paper crafts are available in the library’s “Creativity in a Box – Paper Crafts” kit which can be checked out for home use.

On December 8, 2016, 30 grade K-2 students at the Animas Schools made books.

They started with pre-folded booklets made with these instructions. They then wrote their books. Some students chose to use mainly pictures, while others included words. After their books were done, covers were attached, and students decorated those as well.

Puppets

On December 8, 2016, 30 grade K-2 students at the Animas Schools made puppets and then performed puppet shows as a story telling activity.

The puppets were made by pasting images on to paper plates and cutting them out. The images were either taken from printouts or created from scratch. Wooden sticks were then attached to the plates.

Students really enjoyed this activity and did some pretty amazing puppet shows!
