The Huachuca City Library has an Electronics Club for kids, and they made buttons for members.

The Button Making kit is now available for checkout at this library, as well as many other libraries in the county.

Natural products — lotion and lip balm

On June 2, a group got together to make natural personal care products. We made body lotion and lip balm. Here are the recipes for what we made and information about the materials.

Towers with marshmallows

On Sat., October 22, 2016, we had a marshmallow challenge at the Portal Library.

The challenge is to make a self-supported tower that is as tall as possible with the following rules:

You can use the following supplied materials: 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string, and one marshmallow.
The spaghetti, tape, and string can be cut up. The marshmallow must remain whole.
The marshmallow (unaltered) must be on the top, and the final tower must be self supported.
You have 20 minutes.

Our winner was the team of Teri Denson and Kathleen Talbot with a tower that was 24″ tall. Three out of four teams succeeded in making a self-supported tower, and we saw some creative approaches.

On September 10, we hosted a game jam where kids were invited to design and create a game using these simple materials: two dice, four marbles, a piece of string, four paper cups, a bunch of cork “game pieces” of varying sizes, colored paper cards, round colored stickers, and a piece of posterboard. In addition, kids could use any of the crayons, colored pencils, markers, tape, glue, scissors, etc. that were there.
