Towers with marshmallows

On Sat., October 22, 2016, we had a marshmallow challenge at the Portal Library.

The challenge is to make a self-supported tower that is as tall as possible with the following rules:

  • You can use the following supplied materials: 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string, and one marshmallow.
  • The spaghetti, tape, and string can be cut up. The marshmallow must remain whole.
  • The marshmallow (unaltered) must be on the top, and the final tower must be self supported.
  • You have 20 minutes.

Our winner was the team of Teri Denson and Kathleen Talbot with a tower that was 24″ tall. Three out of four teams succeeded in making a self-supported tower, and we saw some creative approaches.
